Take the triple pane if you are staying in the house
This is the one upgrade we push, and we will explain why rather than just recommending it. Our double pane at U 0.27 comfortably beats the Nebraska code floor of 0.30. But ENERGY STAR in the Northern zone requires U 0.22 or lower, and the federal 25C tax credit tier is tighter still. Triple pane at U 0.20 clears both. What U-factor do I need in Nebraska?
Nebraska is IECC Climate Zone 5 and the state energy code is the 2018 IECC. The prescriptive fenestration requirement is U 0.30 or lower, with SHGC not regulated in Zone 5. Air leakage must be 0.3 cfm per square foot or lower, tested per NFRC 400 or the NAFS standard and labeled.

What is an NFRC CPD number and why do you keep mentioning it?

Vinyl or aluminum?
Vinyl, for a Nebraska house, almost every time. Aluminum conducts heat well, which is the opposite of what a window frame should do. Thermally broken aluminum systems generally land at U 0.35 to 0.55. That may pass code at the very top of the range and it will not reach ENERGY STAR.
There is a second reason we are open about. The United States has antidumping and countervailing duty orders on aluminum extrusions from China with a China-wide rate around 86 percent, and aluminum window frames are named as covered merchandise. Do I need a permit to replace windows in Omaha?
A like-for-like replacement in an existing opening with no change to the size is generally exempt. Enlarging an opening is not, and that comes up often because bedroom windows have to meet the IRC R310 emergency escape and rescue opening requirement. Will new windows pay for themselves?
Not quickly, and we are not going to claim otherwise.
